Why EV Charger Installation Is Not a Side Job

Every charger adds significant continuous load. A bank of Level 2 units or a single DC fast charger can push a service beyond its rating. We start with a real load study, including existing demand patterns, transformer capacity, and growth plans. If the service is tight, we design load management or battery storage before anyone orders a charger.

Utility service upgrades and new meters can take months. Permitting, inspection, and final signoff can add more. The installation schedule is not driven by the chargers; it is driven by the utility and the authority having jurisdiction. Managing that timeline is a project management discipline, not a side task for a general electrician.

ADA stall layout, bollard placement, grounding, signage, and working clearances all have specific requirements. Missing one of them means rework after inspection. We have installed enough sites to know the local variations and to catch them before concrete is poured or trenching is closed.

After the wires are pulled, the chargers must be configured, networked, tested under load, and handed over to the operations team. That means confirming payment processing, testing every port, verifying remote monitoring, and training the site staff. A site that skips this step often ends up with chargers that look installed but do not actually work for drivers.

When the charger supplier, the electrician, and the maintenance provider are three different companies, accountability fragments. We do all three, so the same team that designs the load study also pulls the conduit and answers the service call. The result is fewer delays, fewer callbacks, and a site that works the way it was designed.
