Why So Many EV Chargers Fail in the First Two Years
Property owners are buying chargers every day. Many of them will be calling for service, replacing units or pulling them out of the ground within two years. The problem is not the idea of EV charging. The problem is the gap between what the market is selling and what a commercial site actually needs.
The race to the bottom in hardware
EV charging has become a commodity in the eyes of some buyers. The result is a flood of low-cost units built for price, not for 10-year outdoor duty. Thin powder coats, marginal gaskets and plastic cable management systems that look fine in a showroom start failing after one Florida summer of salt air, heat cycles and UV exposure.
We see the outcome in the field: screens that go blank, card readers that stop reading, connectors that hang loose because the holster has cracked, and network modules that drop offline every time a storm passes through.
Five failure modes we see most often
- Water intrusion. Outdoor electronics need real IP ratings and sealed enclosures. Budget units often cut corners on cable glands and door seals.
- Connector wear. A public charger can see thousands of plug cycles per year. Cheap connectors lose retention force, overheat, or damage vehicle inlets.
- Network dropouts. If the modem, antenna, or firmware is not robust, the charger disappears from the network and stops taking payments.
- No path for updates. Some units ship with firmware that is never patched, leaving bugs and security holes in place for the life of the product.
- Underbuilt power sections. Capacitors, contactors and cooling systems sized for intermittent residential use will not survive high-usage commercial sites.
What the buyer is really paying for
A commercial charger is a piece of revenue infrastructure. It sits outside, runs all day, and handles money from strangers. The total cost is not the purchase price. It is the purchase price plus the cost of downtime, emergency repairs, customer complaints, and the eventual replacement when the unit cannot be fixed.
When we evaluate chargers for a project, we look at cycle life, environmental ratings, warranty depth, parts availability, and whether the manufacturer has a real service network. We only deploy hardware that we are willing to stand behind for years, because we are the ones who will be servicing it.
